ST JAMES BOYS REPRESENT MIDDLESEX

Eugene Carnell and Louis Clayton Molloy represent Middlesex

Congratulations to the 15 members of the Middlesex 10's squad who won the Silver Group of the SW 10's competition held at Bath University, beating Gloucestershire convincingly 29-7 in the Final. In total there were 5 matches, Middlesex winning 4, and losing only one to Hampshire by just one point 15-14. Wins were recorded against Bristol, Somerset, Devon and finally Gloucestershire.
This was the first time that Middlesex have been invited to the SW Regional 10's - an excellent tournament, well run in a great spirit, and enabling games against Counties we would not normally face.

Visit to Auschwitz

Two members of the Sixth Form volunteered to accompany Mr Christian Daw on his visit to the site of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. At one stage they stood in a huge room and were told that this was where 2000 Jews were gassed to death every day! Here are their moving accounts:

'Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it'

GEORGE SANTAYANA

The experience itself was surreal. There was a sensation of 'weirdness'. Having witnessed the sheer scale of it all I felt overwhelmed. It clearly demonstrated the pure evil that man can stoop to, but also it showed the true powers of the human capacity to survive. The experience will last me a lifetime, and I strongly believe that all should bear witness to the events that took place there, and pay homage to those millions who endured such evil. Shil Patel

I was unsure as to what to expect. Having read about it I knew that it was devastating, but I really had not realised the extent of the wickedness nor did I realise the huge affect that it would have on me. The one thing that struck me was that humanity was capable of such evil, yet was also able to find the strength to survive against all odds and in terrible conditions. It showed that we should fight to survive and protect each other from all sorts of tyranny. Daivik Gandhi

St James Senior Boys School, Ashford, Middlesex - January 2010

Here are two lovely winter shots of the new St James Senior Boys School in Ashford, Middlesex. The tranquillity of these scenes belies the re-construction, refurbishment and redecoration that is taking place inside! The contractors moved in on 4th Jan 2010 and started work. We hope that there will be more visits arranged for parents and prospective parents in the coming months, to see the Ashford site and the ambitious plans for the school. Keep an eye on our website for these forthcoming dates.

Ashford Site Visit an Amazing Success

On Saturday last, approximately 450 visitors went to the Ashford site to hear about the vision and the plans for the school right up to 2016. It was a phenomenal turn-out and represents the degree of interest from the Ashford community and prospective parents. It was all highly encouraging and there was a considerable buzz of expectation and excitement. We hope to repeat the exercise at the end of January 2010.
St James Victorious in Semi-Finals of Middlesex Cup

Salvatorian v St James (Away)

Full report from Mr Pilkington

It must be stated, from the outset, that this is the best rugby game I have seen a St James team play in my four years here as a PE teacher. The Under 16's were a depleted year group from injuries before we even set off for north London on Wednesday. Nearly the entire back line comprised of Year 10 boys...

...The boys arrived remarkably calm ten minutes before the allocated kick off time due to traffic. Their referee greeted us by saying he was not prepared to move the allocated kick-off time, so we needed to be changed and ready in ten minutes!

From kick off, the game was ferocious with the Under 15 lads having to knuckle down to the physicality of the year above them. Within the first 10 minutes despite frantic tackling we had too many boys in the rucks and not enough out wide enabling Salvatorian to score and convert putting us 7 points down.

St James responded by running hard and straight with strong running from Eugene in the centres and support running from Mark Jenkins and Justin Liu. Having played three phases, Louis received the ball on the twenty two and side stepping his opposite number he ran in a great try, making the score 7-5.

Salvatorian, realising that they could stretch us out wide with their strong number 11, scored but didn't convert taking it to 12 - 5 down.

As the game continued Justin Liu (flanker) kept the pressure on Salvatorian forcing many mistakes from their scrum half providing St James with a scrum on the 22. Through many phases up the middle of the pitch, with forwards and backs combining Mark Jenkins took the ball five metres from their line, ducked the tackler and went over for a crucial try before half time. Louis converted making it 12 - 12 at half time.

The boys took on the simple advice given to them, which was to take more first time tackles, fan out away from rucks if they are winning them and not to talk to the referee. At half time the mood in the team was optimistic. Somehow the boys knew that victory was within their grasp. The feeling of excitement was palpable and the endeavour and desperation shown by the lads as the second half began was fantastic.

Salvatorian kicked off with the clear intent of scoring quickly. After their try and conversion, this was the last wake-up call our boys needed. If anything, this was the turning point of the match. The message sent on by the subs was simple, tackle and you will win. 19 - 12 down.

As a teacher, this point of the game was the most memorable because the boys were on the back foot and down seven points. To compound this further there were a few decisions that went against us. The team rallied and, at this point, Francis Sadler and Justin Liu were rucking exceptionally hard, giving the opposition messy ball and more opportunities to our runners, Orhun and Eugene. With the threat of Eugene going through them Louis kept hold of the ball rather than shipping it on and went straight through the gap dummying his opposite number and scoring in similar style to Mark's try, making it 19 - 17 down.

The opposition forwards finally came into the game for the first time threatening our tired pack resulting in a try to them which they kicked making it 26 - 17 down.

A change in tactic was needed with our forwards tiring and our big runners being tackled hard. Louis started to kick for possession providing more and more line-outs. This seemed to work as Tom McAuley came on for Mark Jenkins and started stealing a lot of their ball. The forwards gained energy and confidence from this, leading to exactly the same type of try for the third time by Louis. He went on to convert, making it, 26 - 24 down.

Eugene worked tirelessly stretching their team, running out of space and then finding support from Richard Crowther every time to set it up again. Eventually Eugene scored a very good try showing his strength, perseverance and character. Louis converted and we had suddenly had the lead!!!

31 - 26.

We worked hard to snuffle the ball and control possession ending in Francis Sadler being yellow carded and being sent off, leaving us with 14 men and 8 minutes to go.

The boys played hard, working our defence to breaking point. Our tactic of holding on to our lead was not working. It got worse when five minutes later (with two minutes to go) the referee shouted that there was still ten minutes to go! Despair and confusion took over and the boys started shouting in frustration and penalty after penalty was conceded.

The St James character that we so often talk about shone through with scuffling half breaks from Rupert Deane and Justin Liu forcing us up into their half. Eventually as we got close to their line the referee blew his whistle for a scrum to us. More phases ensued until Peter Bunce finished the game in emphatic style by brushing off some of their biggest players and scoring, making it 36 - 26 to us. (No conversion).

The referee signalled for the last play of the match as they kicked off. After another scrum collapsed he finally blew his whistle.

This is a proud moment for me as a PE teacher at St James to write this report as the true gentlemanly conduct of the lads won the day.

One for the memories, but now bring on the final!!!!

St James is featured in top Independent Schools magazine

The editor of The Good Schools Guide, Mr Ralph Lucas, was asked to write an article for 'First Eleven' - a top independent schools magazine. He was asked to write about schools that encouraged 'Entrepreneurship'. Ralph named St James as one of six schools that he felt was particularly successful, amonst them being, Manchester Grammar School and Eton College. This is what he said about the St James Schools:

"The aim of this school is to teach community-led, socially-inspired leadership. Pupils are to follow, as well as to lead, and serve as well as be served. It's a school for budding Mandelas rather than multi-millionaires."

The Arnhem Weekend - A Moving Cadet Report

Justin Murray, Year 12, writes about his experiences at Arnhem last weekend:

Last Thursday, the St James School minibus revved into life, carrying 13 cadets of 239 Para Cadet Detachment to the town of Arnhem, Holland. As it does every year.

Affiliated, as we are, with the Parachute Regiment, 239 Detachment annually attends the commemoration ceremony of the Battle of Arnhem.

This conflict, which was fought on Dutch soil in September 1944, was the largest in the history of airborne forces. Under the plan codenamed ‘Market Garden', thousands of paratroopers from four nations jumped into Holland to seize strategic bridges in an attempt to seek an easy way into Germany and bring the war to an early close.

This weekend, as every year, veterans, civilians, and troops currently in service, gather all alike to remember their fight.
During the four days there on the 65th anniversary of the conflict, St James cadets visited the Airborne Museum outside Arnhem, where we learnt much about the battle and its consequences.

We attended the memorial service at the Airborne Cemetery: a very sobering display. The service included several hundred children from the locality of Arnhem laying wreaths at each of the 1600 graves whilst wispering the names of those who fell and died in 1944.

We were present at the Drop Zone (DZ) to witness the commemorative parachute jump by both modern-day parachute troops and veterans who had first jumped there 65 years previously.

That evening we served drinks at the cocktail party reception, at which many important civil and military dignitaries - including the Secretary of State and several senior generals - were present. This was a highly uncommon but extremely rewarding experience: not many other sixth-formers can say that they have served champagne at such a high-profile event! Moreover, the breath-taking display by the Red Devils (the Parachute Regiment's elite parachute-jumping team), and the performance from the Paras' own military band is not to be missed.

For me, however, the highlight was seeing and speaking to the veterans of the 1944 campaign who still travel to Arnhem today; men over eighty years old who will stand stock still to remember their fallen comrades. I end with a quote from the wall of the Airborne Museum.

"If in the years to come any man says to you ‘I fought at Arnhem', take off your hat to him and buy him a drink, for this is the stuff of which England's greatness is made."
