Extra Curricular Drama
Developing confidence in speech and performance work is an integral part of English and Drama at St James. (See links to English and Drama as curriculum subjects.)
Traditionally each year all Year 7 boys mount productions of plays, in which each boy performs and contributes to the design, costume, lighting etc.
Recent productions have included:
• The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew
• Oliver Twist
• The Phantom Tolbooth
• A Christmas Carol
• The Jungle Book
• The Silver Sword
In Year 9, as part of their English work and the development of a confident familiarity with Shakespeare's works, each class will mount a full scale production of a Shakespeare play, in which every boy will take part.
Recent productions have included:
• Henry V
• A Midsummer Night's dream
• The Winter's Tale
• Henry IV Part 1
• Twelfth Night
• A Comedy of Errors
• Macbeth
Productions in the Upper School are more ad hoc. There is a joint production with St James Senior Girls' School every other year of a fullscale opera, and Senior Drama Club offers a series of small scale performance projects throughout the year. Where there is sufficient interest there are also larger Upper School productions.
