About us - History of the School

St James Schools were founded in 1975 by Leon MacLaren, a London barrister who had devoted himself to philosophy and economics, and who was also the founder of the School of Economic Science which teaches philosophy and related topics to adults in evening classes in London and throughout the UK. For further information, please contact us for the pamphlet 'Frequently asked questions'.

The vision was for a whole education, from 4 ½ years to 18, which nourished the whole being spiritually, emotionally, intellectually and physically.

In line with our philosophy, the schools are open to girls of all faiths, and of none. We do follow the Christian tradition of the nation during periods of collective worship, and scripture lessons are from the King James Bible. Our assemblies, however, contain readings and prayers from a variety of western and eastern sources through which we seek to emphasise the unifying principles common to all the great faiths and teachings of the world.

Our teachers are men and women who share in the recognition that the spiritual aspect of education is of central importance to wellbeing in human life. Many are students of philosophy at the School of Economic Science. Meditation is respected as a valuable practice by all our staff, although not all necessarily meditate themselves.

The Senior Girls moved into the newly acquired school building at Olympia in September 2002 and they now enjoy superb facilities including an excellent Sixth Form suite. The school has grown into a two-form year group throughout, with pupils from 10-18 years of age. Our Junior School pupils transfer at Year 6 and we take in another 20-24 pupils at 11+. The Senior Boys’ School is in Twickenham, Middlesex. The schools have grown significantly throughout the years and we now have approximately 830 pupils between us. Although girls and boys are educated separately, the Junior Schools share the same site at Olympia, where the Senior Girls are also located.

St James Senior Girls School is a member of the Girls Schools Association - GSA and the Independent Schools Association - ISA.

More details about the school may be found on the school's page on the Independent Schools Council website - ISC.
