About us - What people say - Present Pupils

CHRIS WOODHEAD : GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE 2008

I like the school because I feel that all the children share a generous heart and an understanding of peace.

Laura Year 7

My name is Sarah and I started St James a year ago, coming into Year 7. I feel that all the girls really welcomed us into the class. They showed us round and helped us to get our books together. St James really is a different school as it aims to get the best out of you rather than trying to be the most popular school. I have enjoyed having a full curriculum which includes Greek and Latin as well as English and French, and the opportunity to do sports as well as academic lessons. When I first came I felt slightly behind in a few of my subjects, but all the teachers helped me to catch up with the other pupils.

There is a spiritual side to the school. You can really feel the peace between everyone as soon as you walk through the front door. This has inspired me a lot. After every lesson we pause which means that we can leave everything behind from that lesson and just fall still in mind and body, so that you are ready for the next activity.

Sarah Year 7

The teachers expect us to work hard, and always expect us to do our best. It is very encouraging.

Our class always tries to give each other moral support, and explain difficult things to each other.

Although we are expected to be well-disciplined in lessons we still have a laugh sometimes. It is not restricting because all the rules are reasonable.

The best thing about our teachers and headmistress is that any problems at home or at school you can talk to them about, and they will always try to help.

Emily Year 8

Everyone treats each other as if they are sisters. Especially when sometimes you walk past some older girls who you don’t really know and they smile at you and you will feel as if you are at home.

Yang Yang Year 8

The thing I like the most about St James is the motto – ‘Speak the truth, live generously and aim for the best’ and that everyone is kind to each other. I have found, in the year I have been here, that the girls really do follow this motto which gives the school a lovely atmosphere. When I arrived at this school all the girls were very welcoming and friendly and I got really good friends straight away.

Bella Year 8

From the beginning I knew St James was different in almost every aspect. Everyone respected absolutely everybody. There were hardly any quarrels and the way in which people shared everything was incredible. There is a certain amount of strictness in the school which I don’t think of as a barrier but as a guide to use the power in yourself properly otherwise misused power can be dangerous.

The work in the school is good and there is always extra help available which is very useful and it shows that your teachers do care.

Anjalee Year 9

Every morning before the beginning of lessons, we meditate: this is important as it helps you to concentrate better and brings you in a state of perfect stillness to mind and body.

Cecilia Year 10

From the very first day that I joined St James two and a half years ago I was overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of the pupils and staff.
The pupils at St James are extremely friendly. By having small classes you feel that they are your friends and not just your class mates.
St James is absolutely original, it is caring and supportive as well as being well disciplined and polite.

Chadni Year 11

I have been taught always to speak well of others and never to criticize, and this is something I value greatly.

Alix Year 13
