Barnes Wetlands
On April 28th Year 10 biologists visited Barnes Wetlands to study fresh water ecology and grassland management. It was a lovely day out and really brought the subject of ecology to life. Who would have thought that the tiny caddis fly larva could make such an amazing little casing for itself from tiny pieces of plant debris?
Human Physiology
On May 2nd Year 12 biologists visited the Human Sciences department, St Mary's college Twickenham to study the effect of exercise on human physiology using the sophisticated equipment in the laboratories at St Mary's. Shona spent a gruelling 15 minutes on the exercise bike while the other girls measured the volume of air she breathed out by attaching various tubes to her; they also measured her heart rate. We had lots of our questions about exercise well fielded by two excellent PhD students who led the session.
Skydiving
Year 10 visited the University of Herts. to attend a lecture and see some entertaining experiments relating to the physics of skydiving.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
Congratulations to the 13 Year 10's who recently qualified in the Bronze level Expedition section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. They trekked 23Km in the North Downs and qualified with effective teamwork and high spirits. Well done!
Easter Egg Painting Competition
Much fun was had by staff and pupils alike who participated in Easter egg painting competitions to raise money for charity.
Year 9 Play
Congratulations to Year 9 for their refreshingly witty production of A Midsummer Nights Dream with authentic costumes, dances & music and a twist of Bollywood!
Sixth Form Play
The Caucasian Chalk Circle was performed during the Autumn term by the current Sixth Form. This epic play, set in Georgia in the Caucasus mountains, was really brought to life with some powerful dance and movement scenes, authentic costumes, and colloquial Russian words. The Art A level department designed and painted beautiful scenery to accompany the actors. The cast were supported by a highly professional make-up artist from the film & theatre world to give the finishing touches to the Brechtan look.
Summer Term Trips
During the summer term Year 11 Girls visited Greece and Year 9 Girls visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres. Some Year 12 Girls undertook an expedition to Zarnesti in Romania, working in an orphanage and trekking in the Carpathian mountains and two Year 13 Girls who are studying A level Physics also went to the European Centre for Nuclear Research in Geneva.
Debating is fun!
The Mace English-Speaking Union public debating competition was held at Twyford School. Kristen and Kimia (Year 13) spent a long time researching and preparing their speeches on the motion, ‘This House believes that voting should be made compulsory', debating against Latymer Upper School. The debate was an immensely enjoyable event and, despite narrowly failing to go through to the next round, the girls were commended for their performances.
