Mayor Visits St James
The Mayor of Hammersmith, Councillor Minnie Scott Russell, paid a visit to St James Independent School for Senior Girls yesterday morning. After being taken round the school by the Headmistress, Mrs Laura Hyde,
she was entertained by fifteen of the pupils ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old. This consisted of a combined presentation of all aspects of the work done by the girls for the community, either in the school itself, or locally and abroad. She was shown slides of 11, 12 and 13 year old girls cooking and serving lunch, and entertaining mainly retired members of the local community who either come to the 'Art of Hospitality Lunch Club' or are visited by the girls if they are in a nursing home. She also saw the activities of the older girls: helping with reading in local primary schools, promoting ecology and energy-saving within the school and travelling to Romania and Africa to help orphaned children or aids-struck families to improve their lot. Clearly interested, she asked questions or made useful comments throughout. In particular, while applauding the efforts of the older girls in their help abroad, she warned them against becoming so engrossed in the desperate circumstances they found there that they neglected the education and opportunities of making the money which would enable them to be of even more use to those countries later in life. Finally, she was thanked for her comments and presented with flowers by one of the girls.
