Senior Lecture With Alumni, Rama Gheerawo: Inclusive Design & Creative Leadership

On Wednesday, 20 November, Sixth Form students from both St James Schools had the pleasure of attending the Senior Lecture together.

This event, which takes place twice a year,  gives us the opportunity to explore different social topics or opportunities presented by a plethora of speakers each term who share their experiences within their respective job title and our wider society.

We were delighted to invite Rama Gheerawo, a former St James pupil and current alumni, to speak to us about his experiences in design and his contributions around the world. His speech was wonderfully moving, in particular his experiences in Qatar and Hong Kong, helping communities from underprivileged backgrounds and making a family through design and genuine human interaction. His design philosophies were touching and reflected some key aims of the St James ethos. On another note, it was also fun to hear about his contributions in designing some really successful utilities such as the Mini car, which he assisted in the unique design of the dashboard which is one of the most famous aspects of the Mini.

Overall, we had a fantastic Wednesday afternoon, and we learnt a lot from Rama about his contributions and work in the design industry. Even though we will go off into different industries once we leave school, everyone in attendance at the lecture can definitely take advice given to us from Rama forward in their future lives.

The Pause

At St James, we feel it is important to introduce our pupils to stillness and allow them to discover how to be inwardly free and deeply at ease within themselves. A short period of 5-10 minutes at the beginning and middle of every day is allocated to quietude in which pupils may meditate, contemplate or simply be still – according to their own spiritual inclinations.
