Big Smiles, Brave Minds: A Brilliant Year 5 Taster Day

We were delighted to welcome Year 5 pupils from a variety of primary and prep schools to St James Senior Boys’ School for a truly memorable Taster Day.

Although a little apprehensive on arrival, the boys quickly found their footing as they were welcomed into the St James community and grouped into our four Houses: Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson and Churchill, fostering instant camaraderie. The morning was filled with exciting academic sessions, from lively French or Spanish lessons that broke the ice, to creative key ring designs in Art, Design & Technology using our laser cutter. Science took learning outdoors with a hands-on pond-dipping session at the lake, where the discovery of baby axolotls (especially one nicknamed “Turbo”) sparked real excitement. In Drama, pupils brought The Lion King to life through imaginative freeze frames, showcasing creativity and confidence.

After lunch and time to reflect with new friends, the afternoon shifted to physical challenges, with football, group frisbee, and cadet-led team-building exercises like bridge building and obstacle courses. At the end of the day, all boys received a medal to recognise their effort and enthusiasm, while the winning House from the sports challenges proudly took home gold medals. Two standout sportsmen were awarded bespoke St James rugby balls, and many pupils left proudly wearing their camo face paint – a fun and fitting reminder of a full and unforgettable day.

Throughout the event, what stood out most was the boys’ willingness to engage fully, try new things, and support one another. Their curiosity, energy and thoughtfulness reflected the very qualities we encourage in every pupil who walks through our doors.

We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each one of them and hope the experience offered a genuine insight into life at St James. We look forward to seeing many of them again and look forward to welcoming others who may not have visited us before, at our Open Day on Saturday 27 September. Registration for Year 7 2026/27 is open. Contact admissions for further guidance on our admissions journey.

The Pause

At St James, we feel it is important to introduce our pupils to stillness and allow them to discover how to be inwardly free and deeply at ease within themselves. A short period of 5-10 minutes at the beginning and middle of every day is allocated to quietude in which pupils may meditate, contemplate or simply be still – according to their own spiritual inclinations.
