Overview

At St James, Drama is a popular and busy department where boys perform numerous productions each year such as devised work, story-telling, modern texts and Shakespeare.

Every boy will be involved in at least two plays, which take place in Year 7 and 9. We believe that learning and speaking advanced language in front of a live audience leads to great concentration, confidence and the ability to speak freely; an essential attribute in becoming a successful man. Boys also have the opportunity to participate in a school musical with St James Senior Girls’ School.

Drama embodies the school’s ethos where we value stillness and mediation. Our fully equipped drama studio is named ‘The Empty Space’ after Peter Brook’s work who believed that a room does not need to be cluttered with set and props in order for the drama to unfold. We believe that through meditation and stillness, a boy should be free from all of his clutter before he can concentrate on character.
