Overview

The English Department at St James aims to inspire pupils with great works of literature, while ensuring they develop the necessary skills for accurate and concise communication. Through the masters, like Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens and Chaucer, we introduce young men to ideas that have shaped nations. Meanwhile, we also explore modern and 20th Century texts, reading Steinbeck, Hill, H G Wells, Huxley, Morpurgo and Harper Lee and encourage boys to discuss the concepts that these great writers so eloquently present. Drama is also essential, and all boys are involved in class plays in Year 7 and with the potential to perform in another from Year 9 and above. With a developed linguistic understanding a young man learns how to express his thoughts – essential to his future happiness.
