Lower School

On arriving in Year 7, students will have the opportunity to learn French. In Year 8, they will have a half a year of each language: French and Spanish.

The KS3 curriculum has been created to enable pupils to develop skills and linguistic competence within a range of common topic areas and languages. The Modern Foreign Languages team also pride themselves in helping raise the literacy skills of all students by improving the students’ understanding of their own language and transfer their knowledge to a new foreign language.

Students will be assessed every lesson to check progress made and a vocabulary test will be given on a weekly basis. A more summative test will assess different skill areas of a completed unit (listening, speaking, reading and writing). They will have the opportunity to participate in French Cinema Evenings, and to test their vocabulary skills in the Vocabulary Speed Competitions.

At the end of Year 8, students must choose which Modern Language they will take for GCSE. They can choose between either French or Spanish.
