Each year we hold both a Junior and Senior School Speech Competition. At St James, we prize the ability to speak well very highly and this competition gives interested boys the chance to practise that skill under the watchful eyes of their peers.
Boys take to the stage in the Moot Hall, performing a range of monologues, from famous speeches and poems to extracts from books and plays. The choice of piece is up to them! During Drama lessons the boys are given the chance to practice, getting guidance from the Drama teachers. Two categories are judged: Shakespeare and non-Shakespeare.
Winners typically display excellent diction, use of emotion and fantastic gestures, which all help to hammer home the meaning in their words.
The winners of the Competition are invited to perform at the annual Prizewinners’ Concert, which is held in conjunction with the Senior Girls’ School.
