The Governors may, from time to time, make Scholarships available for Sport and Music. The Headmasters Scholarship is only awarded to the candidate who demonstrates an outstanding performance in the entrance assessments, which includes the interview and the examination. The is awarded by the Headmaster at the end of the entrance procedures.
Scholarships for Sport and Music will be awarded to boys who show outstanding potential in their given area. All candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to, and enthusiasm for, their chosen scholarship subject. Only candidates applying for entry at the age of eleven or thirteen can submit an application. No scholarship application will be accepted unless the candidate is in receipt of an offer of a place.
Talented sportsmen, joining at Year 7 or Year 9, who are playing at or working towards county level and above in one of the school’s main sports of Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Rugby and Tennis are invited to apply for a Sports Scholarship. For all candidates an ability to learn and a willingness to further their sporting career are essential. Candidates will be expected to attend school for a practical assessment in the spring term.
Music Scholarships will be made available for outstanding musicians for Year 7 or Year 9 entry. They must be playing at a high level – involved in District and/or National orchestras, as well as Grade 5 or above for Year 7, and Grade 7 or above for Year 9. Applicants who can play an instrument in the St James orchestra will be favoured over those playing instruments that do not normally feature in a classical orchestra e.g. violin, viola, cello, flute, trumpet etc.
Application Process for Sport and Music
Please send a covering letter with the registration form outlining your son’s sporting or musical ability. After the registration deadline Scholarship Application forms will be sent all to interested applicants. Following the normal admissions process, and if the candidate is offered a place at St James he will be invited to attend an assessment day in the spring term. The deadline for a scholarship application is Thursday 14th February 2019.
