Scholarships

Our Scholarships are available for Sport, Drama, Art and Music.

Scholarships for Sport, Drama, Art and Music will be awarded to boys who show outstanding potential in their given area.

All candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to, and enthusiasm for, their chosen scholarship subject. Only Year 7 and Year 9 applicants can submit an application. No scholarship application will be accepted unless the candidate is in receipt of an offer of a place.

We also offer The Head’s Scholarship,awarded to a candidate who demonstrates an outstanding performance in the entrance assessments and interview.

 

Application Process for Sport, Drama, Art and Music for entry in September 2025.

Applications for scholarships September 2025 entry close on Friday 31 January 2025. A form and where requested supplementary evidence must be submitted by this date.

Please note that we can only accept one scholarship application per child.

All scholarships: Unfortunately, due to students needing to perform and be assessed alongside their peers during the scholarship process, candidates must attend on the date specified by the School. Alternative dates are not available.

Sports

Sports Scholarships are available for outstanding sportsmen or for those who display exceptional sporting potential. For external applicants Sports Scholarships are available at 11+ and 13+ entry. They must be aspiring to play at County and/or National Level in one of the school’s main sports (Basketball, Cricket, Rugby, Football, Hockey, Tennis and/or Athletics). For all applicants an ability to learn and a willingness to contribute fully to school sport across all three terms and a desire to further their sporting career are essential.   

 Those students who have already been offered an academic place at St James Senior Boys’ School and are interested in a Sports Scholarship, should complete an application form available on the school website Scholarship application forms 

This must be accompanied by a sporting reference from their main sport outside of school or their head of PE if they only play sport at school and sent to admissions@stjamesboys.co.uk by the specified deadline date. 

Applicants will be expected to attend the school for a practical assessment day and an interview with the Director of Sport or one of the PE team on a date specified by the School.  

 

Music

Music Scholarships are available for outstanding musicians or to those who show outstanding potential on an instrument. For external applicants Music Scholarships are available at 11+ and 13+ entry.  They must be playing at a high level – involved in District and/or National orchestras and have achieved Grade 4 (or equivalent) or above at age 11. Applicants who can play an instrument in the St James orchestra will be favoured over those playing instruments that do not normally feature in a classical orchestra (e.g. Violin, viola, cello, flute, trumpet etc.)   

Those students who have already been offered an academic place at St James Senior Boys’ School and are interested in a Music Scholarship, should complete an application form available on the school website Scholarship application forms 

If a reference is available outlining what ensembles etc. the boy has been a part of, this should be sent to admissions@stjamesboys.co.uk by the specified deadline date, but is not essential. 

Applicants will be expected to attend an audition on a date specified by the School, which will consist of:   

  • Performance of one prepared piece for main instrument (an accompanist is provided) 
  • Sight reading   
  • Aural tests, including singing  
  • Performance of prepared piece on second instrument or voice (if applicable). If a second instrument/voice is not being offered, two pieces on the main instrument should be prepared; and   
  • Interview with the Director of Music   

Auditions will be held by the Director of Music.  

Drama

Drama Scholarships are available for outstanding actors or to those who show outstanding potential as performers. For external applicants Drama Scholarships are available at 11+ and 13+ entry. Students should demonstrate a dedicated interest and exceptional potential ability as an actor on the stage.   

Those students who have already been offered an academic place at St James Senior Boys’ School and are interested in a Drama Scholarship, should complete an application form available on the school website Scholarship application forms 

This must be accompanied by submission of a letter (1 Side of A4) detailing their performance history and reasons why their interest should be considered, through admissions@stjamesboys.co.uk mailbox by the specified deadline date. 

Applicants will be expected to attend an audition on a date specified by the School, which will consist of: 

  • Performance of a short (1-2 minutes), prepared audition monologue to the Head of Drama. The monologue should be selected by the student. 
  • Participation with other applicants in a short workshop which will be run to observe children working together, culminating in delivery of an unseen piece. 

Art and Design

Art and Design Scholarships are available for boys who excel in the Arts. For external applicants Art and Design Scholarships are available at 11+ and 13+ entry. Students should demonstrate an exceptional ability within their chosen area.  

Those students who have already been offered an academic place at St James Senior Boys’ School and are interested in an Art and Design Scholarship, should complete an application form available on the school website Scholarship application forms 

 Applicants will be expected to attend an assessment on a date specified by the School, which will consist of: 

  • Talking through a portfolio of their own work displaying at least four different media, which they must bring with them on the day. The work could range from a wide variety of artistic mediums including; digital design, 3-dimensional pieces, drawing, painting, collage, textiles or a fully realised product made by the boy.   
  • An hour-long practical assessment designed to demonstrate the students drawing and 3D model making capabilities. The context will be set by the Head of ADT and the boys must create a piece in the allotted time.
