It was an honour to be shortlisted for the TES Award for ‘Well Being’ this year, and also a disappointment that we did not win. I am so competitive.
I enjoyed the Awards Ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Friday evening and it was magical to hear us mentioned alongside the famous names of the independent schools world - Eton, Wellington and Harrow - how far St James has come since 1975!
This nomination sits proudly alongside our ISA Awards for ‘Outstanding Sport’ and ‘Parent Engagement.’
I met this week with our Bursar to push on the Sports Hall Development and work should start on the site soon. I have been waiting seven years for this and know it is the right step forward. Our physical education department is outstanding, as inspections and, the before mentioned award, attest. Our rugby and hockey are quite brilliant and cleaning our victory silverware is becoming a full time job. Our unbeaten Year 8 rugby team are potentially our best ever. Cricket has improved in recent years, but the Sports Hall offers the possibility to establish a real Cricket Academy with indoor nets throughout the year.
Our reputation for holistic, inside-out, education continues to grow. Each St James pupil has the opportunity to explore a philosophical education. Their enthusiasms connect them to something larger which in turn connects them to a destiny that promises a full flowering of their being.
Before I close I would also ask for a boon: please encourage your sons to offer an act for St James Has Talent on Friday 13th March - it’s for Cancer Research, a dreadful disease that touches so many of us including both my parents. The boys can sign up on my Headmaster’s Notice Board outside the Staff Room.
Please also buy tickets to come - it promises to be a very special Evening.
Finally, have a lovely half term.
