In Year 8 Biology we have been investigating diffusion and the movement of substances from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.  In a recent lesson we used Skittles to see this in action.  The girls placed their Skittles around the plate or bowl and added water.  Half the class added hot water, and half the class added cold water.  They then timed to see how long it took the colours to diffuse from an area of high concentration in the Skittle, to an area of low concentration in the water towards the middle of the plate.  They stopped the time once the colours met in the middle and we recorded our results.  Whilst there were a few variations on this experiment including the size of the plate and the temperature of the water, we had a lot of fun learning about the effect of temperature on speeding up diffusion.
