At St James Prep, we adopt a “Teaching for Mastery” ethos and vision in our Mathematics teaching. This draws upon evidence and current research, led by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, into how Mathematics is taught highly successfully in East Asia, in Shanghai and Singapore in particular. In our Mathematics lessons we nurture our pupils’ problem-solving and reasoning skills at the same time as their factual recall and numerical fluency: to put it in a nutshell, “the answer is only the beginning”. We want all our pupils to be excited and intrigued by Mathematics, and to love exploring not only “how?” and “what?” questions but also “why?” and “why not?” and “what if?” questions. We are confident that through our doing so, through our Teaching for Mastery, not only are our pupils likely to maximise their success in, and their enjoyment of, Mathematics while with us at St James Prep, but also they will leave us with the strongest foundations on which they can build towards their future success in Mathematics: at GSCE, A-level, and beyond.
