Academic Enrichment

At St James Senior Boys, we are very proud of how we stretch our strongest students. Those who demonstrate exceptional interest and ability in academic work, art, drama or notable sporting skills are given many opportunities to maximise their potential in each year group.

Each year our pupils enter school and national competitions such as the UK Maths Trust Challenge, Science Olympiads, Modern Foreign Languages Oxford University Writing Fiction competition or ISI Writing and speech competitions. We are an affiliated ‘Arkwright Scholarship School’, this programme is aimed at boys in set one in GCSE/A level Maths that also study a STEM subject.  We have a wonderful Arts week competition which finishes with a Performing Arts Gala to celebrate and showcase our wonderful talent.

We celebrate academic success in our assemblies and have a Quality of Work Award notice board where the students’ work is recognised and rewarded for Academic excellence.

The Pause

At St James, we feel it is important to introduce our pupils to stillness and allow them to discover how to be inwardly free and deeply at ease within themselves. A short period of 5-10 minutes at the beginning and middle of every day is allocated to quietude in which pupils may meditate, contemplate or simply be still – according to their own spiritual inclinations.
